Habitat for Humanity homes are built primarily through volunteer construction labor which helps keep the cost of the homes affordable for our buyers.  Our project directors, crew leaders and crew members are all volunteers.

When

Habitat construction sites generally operate on Saturdays from 8:00am to 4 pm.; we also work on some Wednesdays.  Volunteers are asked to arrive by 8:00 to check-in and spend the day at the assigned site.

Who

Our sites are open volunteers of all skill levels.  While individuals are always welcome, we ask groups to discuss participation with our volunteer coordinator.  We strive to have the volunteer experience to be both productive and fun; a crew that is larger than the site can accommodate means volunteers may feel unproductive.

Our policy states that no one under the age of 16 is allowed on a construction site while construction is going on and that no one under the age of 18 is allowed to do any hazardous activities including the use of power tools and machinery; demolition; roofing, and excavation operations.

There are many ways children under the age of 16 can be directly involved with the work of Habitat for Humanity without actually being on the work site during construction.  For example, they can build mail boxes or flower boxes for the new home, put down sod and plant flowers around the new home, provide food for volunteers, help with groundbreaking and house dedication ceremonies, baby-sit for volunteers or partner families so they can complete their sweat equity hours and clean the house before homeowners move in.

New Volunteer Training and Safety Course

Lockton Insurance and Habitat for Humanity International have provided us with an online course to prepare you for your work day.  Follow this link to view the course.  Make sure you start with the course instructions to get the access code to open the actual course.  At a minimum....

Worksite Safety Guidelines

Each volunteer must read our safety guidelines prior to going to our worksite.  Follow this link and read the guidelines before going to one of our sites.

Skill Requirements

No specific skills are required, just a willingness to learn.  Each site has an experienced project director to provide on-the-job training.

Release and Waiver of Liability

Each volunteer must sign a Release and Waiver of Liability agreeing to take personal responsibility for any accident or injury that might occur.

What to Bring

Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools such as hammer, tape, tool belt or nail apron, utility knife, safety glasses and carpenter’s pencil. Please label your own equipment with your name.

What to Wear

1. Wear clothing and gloves that are appropriate for construction work and, of course, the weather. Loose clothing can be dangerous around power tools.

2.  Wear thick soled shoes.

3.  Wear protective glasses.
