For those you don’t want to pound nails…strong, well functioning committees sustain Habitat for Humanity’s long-term house building efforts.  Northern Fox Valley carries out its work through committees appointed to carry out the various tasks of the organization.

Family Selection

This committee is comprised of volunteers who help in the process of selecting partner families.  This includes reviewing applications, interviewing the prospective families, and conducting home visits.  Committee meetings are held monthly.  The integrity of Habitat for Humanity’s program depends upon fair, objective, nondiscriminatory family selection.

Family Support

Volunteers provide partner families with a support system that helps them get ready for home ownership.  This is accomplished by meeting with the family from the time they are selected until they move in.  Family Support volunteers communicate with the family, track sweat equity hours, etc.  This volunteer position is an instrumental part of Habitat’s goal to be a “people to people” partnership ministry aimed at the empowerment of families and communities, not merely a construction ministry.  There is a special need for Spanish speaking members for this committee.

Event Planning Board

Habitat for Humanity sponsors a number of fundraising events each year.  These events vary in size and scope and each needs volunteer labor to be successful.  Events include an annual Dinner and Silent Auction, Thomas the Tank Engine at the Illinois Railway Museum, a Walk-a-thon, and homeowner groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies.

Site Selection

This committee locates and evaluates lots for future Habitat homes.  This includes working with realtors, visiting the lots, verifying zoning, determining utility locations, checking flood plains, etc.
